Gertie the dinosaur was directed by Winsor McCay and is one of the first animations to be ever made and also considered the first character featured animation. This animation was silent in black an white, but stilled displayed the effective principles of animation; the timing, facial expressions and movement of ‘Gertie’ are just as perfect as any animated mascot of today, compared to Winsor McCays first two films ‘Little Nemo’ and ‘The Story of a Mosquito’ there is a significant improvement within this animation. One of the fascinating parts of this 7 minute animation would have to be the interactive scene between Winsor McCay and ‘Gertie the Dinosaur’; when he gave the dinosaur commands it would respond with the exact reaction, which I thought was actually remarkable for the time in, which it was made.
